Planet – The Partnerships
Network Mission from Ireland (November 22-27, 2003)
The Planet Education & Training Policy Group from
Ireland has been seeking to develop an international link
with agencies dealing with educational disadvantage issues
and Newfoundland and Labrador was chosen as being the most
relevant in terms of the historical and cultural links as
well as being an island province. A link has been made
within the Department of Youth Services & Post Secondary
Education, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Phase
One of the Project commenced with this inward Mission of six
Partnership staff from Ireland. Within this one-week visit
they looked at the logistics of the program in this province
and how to transfer the program into an Irish context. They
also focused on setting up hosts for the Irish youths
visiting the province next year.
Visual Arts Student Wins
Award (November 13, 2003
Ireland Newfoundland Partnership (INP) – IBP’s
counterpart in Ireland, awards Sir Wilfred Grenfell College
fourth year student $1000 euros for his digital artwork.
Matthew Hollett participated in an art competition between
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College of Corner Brook and the
Waterford Institute of Technology in Waterford, Ireland. The
competition involved Irish students writing poems and
sending them to Grenfell students, who then interpreted the
poetry through digital imagery. Ireland Business
Partnerships' Vince Withers was pleased to present the
cheque to Mr. Hollett on behalf of INP.

IBP Makes Presentations on the West Coast of Newfoundland
(November 13-15, 2003)
In the City of Corner Brook Mr. Vince Withers, Past
Chair of IBP, along with Mr. Colin Maddock, Director of
International Development for the Partnership presented on
an Irish Development Model and its potential for regional
economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador. An
informative presentation was made to the jointly sponsored
Economic Development Corporation and the Greater Corner
Brook Board of Trade. In attendance were some 12 economic
development practitioners and 15 business community
representatives. IBP received some media coverage on these
presentations with the NTV Evening News covering the event.
Mr. Colin Maddock then expanded this presentation to the
Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland to the town of St.
Anthony on November 15. Interested attendees here for the
presentations were the Association of Western Newfoundland,
the Southwestern Marine and Mountains Zone Corporation, the
Long-Range Regional Economic Development Board and the
Nordic Economic Development Board Inc.
Oceans Mission to Ireland
(November 1- 7, 2003)
There was an outward Oceans Mission to Ireland held in
November from the 1st to the 7th. This mission was led by

Aquaculture/Shellfish
Mission from Ireland (October 21-24, 2003)
Seven CEOs of Irish seafood companies made a 3-day
mission to Newfoundland from October 21-24th. IBP and
Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA) hosted
this mission and also arranged for these companies to meet
with representatives from the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans, Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural
Development, and NRC-IRAP. The Irish seafood CEOs also
received various presentations from five Newfoundland
seafood companies. A return mission is planned for the New

Johnston Visits Newfoundland (October 13-24, 2003)
The Irish tall ship, Jeanie Johnston, visited St. John’s
October 13-24, 2003. The visit marked the last stop of its
North American tour, which included stops in New York,
Boston, and Montreal. The Jeanie Johnston is a replica of
the famous ship, which was built in Quebec in 1847 and
carried thousands of Irish people across the Atlantic during
the Great Famine of the 19th century to the United States
and Canada. The Jeanie Johnston project links Ireland and
Canada by historic ties that are to be celebrated by this
visit to St. John’s. The Jeanie Johnston departed on Friday,
October 24 for her cross Atlantic sail back to her home port
of Fenit, Co. Kerry, Ireland. For further information you

Mr. John Bruton Receives
Memorial University Honorary Degree (October 17, 2003)
Former Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland and former
president of the European Council received an honorary
degree of Doctor of Laws from Memorial University on October
17, 2003. Mr. Bruton played a key role in the development of
the Euro and both as finance minister and as Prime Minister,
in the extraordinary success of the Irish economy.
Town of Tilting Receives
Heritage Designation (June 21, 2003)
A delegation from Ireland was in the town of Tilting,
Fogo Island for ceremonies to mark the designation of the
town as the first provincial heritage district. The
delegation, which included Mr. Michael Ahern, Minister for
trade and commerce for the Government of Ireland and the
chairman of IBP’s counterpart, Ireland Newfoundland
Partnership (INP), attended the ceremonies along with Mrs.
Agnes Aylward, INP Director and Tom Hyland, member of the
INP Board of Directors.
